Flight Dealer of the Month: Ukuleleplein

From a webshop launched more than a decade ago to one of the Benelux’s dedicated ukulele specialists, Ukuleleplein has built its reputation around a simple idea: ukuleles deserve to be taken seriously. With an exclusive focus on the instrument, extensive knowledge of strings and setup, and a strong connection to the Dutch ukulele community, Ukuleleplein has become a trusted destination for players of all experience levels. We caught up with the founder to learn how the store began, what makes a specialist ukulele shop different, and why Flight’s innovations have resonated with his customers.

Can you tell us a bit about your store and how it all started?

Ukuleleplein started 12.5 years ago as a webshop, with a clear focus on ukuleles that offered better value for money than many of the instruments available in regular music stores. From the very beginning, the goal was to give people access to good-quality ukuleles and to show them what this wonderful instrument is really capable of.

What inspired you to open a music store, and why focus on ukuleles?

Ukuleles are still often underestimated. I wanted to change that by showing people that the ukulele is a fully fledged musical instrument, and actually much more than that. It is an instrument that can bring people together, inspire creativity, and simply make people happy.

What makes your store unique compared to others?

I specialize exclusively in ukuleles, which makes Ukuleleplein unique. I believe I am the only true ukulele specialist in the Benelux that focuses entirely on this instrument.

I also make sure that every instrument leaves the shop in perfect condition. If necessary, I adjust the strings to suit the individual player. Over the years, I have developed a great deal of knowledge about string choices and instrument setup.

For me, selling a ukulele is not simply about putting an instrument in a box. It is about making sure the customer receives an instrument that feels and sounds right for them.

How would you describe your local music community?

The ukulele community in the Netherlands is incredibly social and welcoming. It is a community where everyone can join in, regardless of their musical experience or skill level. That sense of connection is one of the things I love most about the ukulele world.

What role do ukuleles play in your store today?

Ukuleles are the heart of the business. That makes a huge difference compared to a shop where the ukulele is just one of many instruments. Everything I do is focused on ukuleles, from selecting the instruments to setting them up and helping customers find the right one.

Why did you decide to carry Flight Ukuleles?

The innovations that Flight has brought to the ukulele world fit very well with my customers. They have introduced fresh ideas and designs that have really helped push the instrument forward.

Flight has also done a lot for the baritone ukulele. Around seven years ago, there was very little choice available on the market. Today, baritone ukuleles are becoming increasingly popular and are definitely trending in my shop.

Do you have a favorite Flight model or one that your customers especially love?

The Aviator models are probably the most talked-about Flight innovation of 2026. I really believe they have a lot of potential and that we will see much more of them in the future.

Can you share a memorable moment or story from your store?

There are special moments almost every day. What I enjoy most is seeing the incredible diversity of ways people use their ukulele. For some, it is simply something they enjoy playing at home. For others, it becomes a way to inspire and connect with people in large venues and at festivals.

Seeing what the ukulele can mean to different people is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

Do you host events, workshops, or community activities? If so, tell us about them.

Yes, very much so. Together with a small team of dedicated volunteers, I organize Dutch Uke Day, which has grown into the largest ukulele event in the Benelux.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your shop, and what’s next for you?

What makes me most proud is the incredible appreciation and trust I receive from my customers. That means a lot to me.

Looking ahead, I want to introduce even more people to the ukulele world and show them just how much fun, creativity, and connection this little instrument can bring. There is still so much to discover, and I would love to help more people experience that for themselves.
